Be-Good-to-Your-Marriage Therapy: Rule #1

I'm beginning a new series focusing purely on marriage. Each blog post will spotlight one simple rule. Each rule is taken from a wonderful little book called "Be-Good-to-Your-Marriage Therapy" written by Kass Dotterweich.

Rule #1:
Explore Life Together; There's Always Something New to Discover

Interpretation:

Enjoy quality time together with your spouse. Create new experiences together. It's one thing to try something new alone; It's another to share a new experience with your husband/wife. Sharing new experiences together creates a wonderful bond between two people. Use your imagination. There's a whole world to explore together!

Explore a couple of these ideas on for size:

1. Experience a new food item together.

If you want to make the experience interesting, enjoy different types of main course exotic meats that you may have not had before. Remember, this is about creating a shared memory. You two can take pride in being the only couple in the neighborhood to have had a unique bazaar food. It's all about the shared experience. The New York Times and Lifehacker.com recently posted an article about preventing relationships from feeling stale. They recommend that the goal for couple is to find ways to keep injecting novelty into the relationship.

(ex: Theme the evening Australian Style - rent the movie, Crocodile Dundee, and enjoy alligator steaks or kangaroo burgers)

2. Learn a new hobby together.

Is there something on your list of lifetime goals that your spouse may also be interested in? Have you both always wanted to experience the world below the ocean? SCUBA may just be your new found interest to learn together. How about honey. Yes, you love YOUR honey; do you also like the honey that bees produce? Take a class at your local Apiary on how to raise your own bees for honey. Talk about a sweet experience the two of you can share together. Another idea, take a dance class together. The list can go on and on.

Well, that should get you started! Your experiences can be as simple as an evening walk or as unique as you can imagine. Enjoy all the endless possibilities of how you and your spouse can explore life together. The key is 'Together'.
